v0.2 — Migrating & Rebuilding Master Template Panels

Building Masters | 1Ds | Phase 1

Last Updated: May 5, 2026

ARTBOARD SETUP & PANEL MIGRATION

OVERVIEW

I walked through migrating master templates in the 5.0 folder, updating versions from 5.0 to 5.0.1, and using a new format that shows the master template, exports, and today’s date. Then I unlocked the production layer, copied and released guides into the search layer, and extracted the correct panels, removing unwanted appearances like strokes. I moved the transferred panels into the collar symbol, and planned batch workflow so I could repeat it across four sizes efficiently. No viewer action was requested.

STEP-by-STep guide

1. Confirm the versioning format before saving 0:24

generated-image-at-00:00:24

  • The file is being prepared for migration inside the 5.0 folder.

  • The naming convention is being updated so the file version reflects:

    • the master template family,

    • the build/version number,

    • and the date.

  • The speaker settles on a format that keeps the master template identifier visible, while still showing the current build version and date.

  • Key idea: use the filename to quickly tell which master template was used and what stage the file is in.

2. Save the file as a beta/build version 5:04

generated-image-at-00:05:04

  • The current work is not the final released version yet.

  • The speaker explains that:

    • 5.0 is the final released version,

    • 5.0.1 is the behind-the-scenes beta/build version,

    • once released, the extra decimal digit is removed.

  • This lets the team keep working in small increments without confusing the live version.

  • The file is saved using the beta-style naming convention before continuing.

3. Open the live master and locate the production layers 6:07

generated-image-at-00:06:07

  • Move into the live master file for the large/extra-large size.

  • In the Layers panel:

    • unlock the production layer,

    • navigate to the correct size grouping.

  • The goal is to extract the needed artwork from the old master and rebuild it in the new structure.

4. Release all guides so the artwork becomes editable paths 6:35

generated-image-at-00:06:35

  • Find all objects that are still set as guides.

  • Select them and release the guides using either:

    • right-click → Release Guides,

    • or View > Guides > Release Guides,

    • shortcut mentioned: Command+Shift+5.

  • Once released, the guide objects become editable paths instead of locked guide elements.

  • This is necessary before moving or rebuilding the artwork.

5. Pull the needed artwork out of the old structure 7:35

generated-image-at-00:07:35

  • Bring the released paths and clipping masks out of their current groups.

  • The speaker repeatedly moves items upward/outward so they are easier to work with.

  • Some elements are grouped together temporarily for organization.

  • The goal is to isolate the pieces needed for the new build, not preserve the old structure exactly.

6. Identify which panels are needed and skip the ones that are not 9:11

generated-image-at-00:09:11

  • The file contains multiple panels, but not all are needed.

  • The speaker notes the relevant panels are typically:

    • front,

    • back,

    • right,

    • collar.

  • The left sleeve/panel can be skipped in this workflow because it is not needed for the transfer being demonstrated.

  • This reduces unnecessary work and keeps the migration focused.

7. Replace the base panel artwork inside each symbol 10:07

generated-image-at-00:10:07

  • Start with the base of each panel/symbol.

  • Double-click into the base layer for the panel you are rebuilding.

  • Delete the old base panel artwork.

  • Paste in the new artwork from the old master.

  • Ungroup if needed, then clear any unwanted appearance/stroke settings.

  • Set the artwork position to 0,0 so it aligns correctly.

8. Repeat the same replacement process for each panel 11:53

generated-image-at-00:11:53

  • The speaker prefers to start with the collar first, then work around the rest.

  • For each panel:

    • click into the correct base/symbol,

    • delete the old build,

    • paste the new panel,

    • set it to 0,0,

    • confirm it updates correctly.

  • The right sleeve is handled by clicking into the sleeve base, not the sleeve artwork itself.

  • Once the panel updates, the color/appearance change confirms the transfer worked.

9. Work in batches instead of one item at a time 13:13

generated-image-at-00:13:13

  • The speaker recommends batching repetitive tasks:

    • release all guides at once,

    • group everything at once,

    • transfer all four panels for a size at once.

  • This is much faster than repeating the same steps for every single style individually.

  • The workflow is especially useful because older masters require more cleanup than newer ones.

10. Continue extracting guides and cleaning up paths 16:15

generated-image-at-00:16:15

  • If guide release fails in one place, use the menu command again to avoid wasting time.

  • Continue selecting guide objects and releasing them until the artwork is fully converted to editable paths.

  • The speaker emphasizes being careful not to misclick, since that can force you to repeat the process.

  • Once the guides are gone, the remaining artwork can be cleaned up and grouped properly.

11. Remove appearance settings and organize the extracted pieces 22:04

generated-image-at-00:22:04

  • Clear any unwanted appearance settings, especially strokes.

  • Bring clipping masks and related paths up into a cleaner structure.

  • Group related pieces together so the panel is easier to manage.

  • The goal is to isolate the cut/sew artwork from the old master and prepare it for the new template structure.

12. Extract the correct sleeve and panel pieces 25:16

generated-image-at-00:25:16

  • Keep the right sleeve and skip the left sleeve when it is not needed.

  • Remove duplicate or unnecessary exterior/interior pieces.

  • The speaker explains that the important output is the cut-and-sew artwork, not every old master element.

  • Once the correct pieces are isolated, they should all appear consistently formatted.

13. Transfer the artwork into the collar symbol as the staging point 27:56

generated-image-at-00:27:56

  • Use the collar as the staging area for the transferred panels.

  • Click into the collar base, delete the old content, and paste in the new pieces.

  • Because the artwork has already been cleaned up, there is less need to ungroup or remove appearance settings again.

  • This creates a clean intermediate state before distributing the panels back out to their final locations.

14. Save progress and move to the next build stage 29:41

generated-image-at-00:29:41

  • The speaker saves the work as 5.1 and then prepares to move to the next stage.

  • The next step is to increment the file again, using a new save-as version to show progression.

  • The workflow is intentionally broken into small steps so nothing gets too far ahead or becomes hard to reverse.

  • Current stage focus: get the panels into the collar first, then continue outward.

15. Repeat the same migration process for the remaining sizes and layers 30:57

generated-image-at-00:30:57

  • After the collar staging step, the same process will be repeated for the remaining sizes.

  • The speaker plans to continue by moving the artwork into:

    • the sew layer,

    • then the cut layer,

    • and any other required layers.

  • The video ends by noting that the rest of the work is repetitive and will follow the same pattern.

  • The next tutorial will continue from this point and show the next layer transition.
