v0.11 — Applying Cuffs Layers
Building Masters | 123 | Phase 3
Last Updated: May 5, 2026
Key GRAPHICS & PATTERN LAYERS
Overview
In this lesson, you will learn how to update and standardize the cuff setup for production so that right and left cuffs match across all panels.
You will begin by updating the working date and minor version, then turning on the Cuffs segment for the current file. Using the Direct Select tool, you will compare the right and left cuff symbols, identify any discrepancies, and correct them by adjusting fold alignment and symbol sizing until both cuffs match exactly.
Next, you will remove and replace outdated cuff graphics, apply the updated cuff layer to the sleeves, and copy the stripe layer to maintain consistent structure across 2D and 3D panels. You will finish with a quick quality check, turning off labels and design boxes for a clean view, and then save the file so the cuff work is ready for the next stage.
STEP-by-STep guide
1. Update the file version and date 0:00
-
Start by opening the Cuffs file/work segment.
-
Update the date to the current working day.
-
Increment the minor version (the transcript mentions moving to the 11th minor version).
-
Tracking date/version helps measure:
-
how long the master took to create
-
how many versions were completed
-
how much work was done in a day
-
2. Verify the cuff symbols and identify mismatches 1:09
-
Cuffs are intended to be the same across production sizes, so this should be a straightforward update.
-
Use the Direct Select Tool to inspect the Right Cuff and Left Cuff symbols.
-
Confirm whether both cuffs match.
-
If they do not match, zoom in and investigate the discrepancy before continuing.
3. Turn off halftones and change the cuff color for easier editing 2:29
-
Turn off the halftone layers to improve performance and reduce visual clutter.
-
Change the cuff color to a highly visible color (for example, blue or yellow).
-
This makes it easier to confirm you are editing the correct object and to spot overhangs or errors.
4. Compare the cuff sizes and locate the discrepancy 3:13
-
Pull the cuff information from the large size and compare the symbol IDs.
-
One cuff should match the expected symbol number, but the transcript shows a mismatch.
-
Open the cuff and inspect the size settings.
-
Confirm the cuff is set to the correct adult large dimensions before adjusting placement.
5. Align the cuff to the fold and adjust its position 4:17
-
Turn on registration to see the fold and alignment reference.
-
The cuff should be aligned to the fold line.
-
Move the cuff down so it matches the fold correctly.
-
Use the Y-axis adjustment to reposition it precisely.
-
Keep the height consistent while making the placement fit the fold.
6. Resize the symbol so it fits the cuff correctly 6:22
-
Adjust the symbol height to an even value so the cuff stays proportionate.
-
Reduce the symbol size until it fits within the cuff area.
-
The transcript settles on a size around 20 as the correct fit.
-
This becomes the guide version used to update the other cuff.
7. Copy the corrected cuff into the other side and confirm both match 8:01
-
Use the corrected cuff as the guide.
-
Paste the updated cuff into the other cuff side.
-
Verify the centerline and bottom alignment.
-
Hide the guide and confirm the right cuff and left cuff now match exactly.
8. Add labels and keep the file organized for training and QC 10:58
-
Keep labels such as Halftone and Gradient visible when needed for training or review.
-
Use labels and color changes as a fail-safe so you can quickly confirm the correct object.
-
This helps prevent confusion later when multiple cuff versions are being edited.
9. Remove outdated cuff pieces and prepare the correct panel structure 14:41
-
Delete the old cuff pieces that are no longer needed.
-
Bring in the correct panel and confirm the cuff IDs.
-
Note that some cuffs may have a stroke, which changes the visible ID slightly.
-
Make sure the cuff sits on the correct bottom alignment line.
10. Add the stripe layer to the cuff structure 16:07
-
To keep the cuff consistent, add the stripe layer into the cuff structure.
-
Click the stripe layer first so it is placed correctly.
-
Paste the stripe into the cuff stripes area.
-
Remove the sleeve stripes and replace them with the cuff version.
-
This is a two-step process: add the stripe layer, then swap in the cuff content.
11. Build the 3D cuff version and clean up the 2D panels 17:43
-
Move on to the 3D version of the adult large cuff.
-
Rename or update the size to match the 3D size.
-
Check the QC line to make sure the cuff is aligned properly.
-
Delete the cuffs in the 2D panels and replace them with the correct cuff base.
-
If needed, use the cuffs supplied by Ryan so you do not have to rebuild them manually.
12. Remove technical sketch cuffs and replace them with the correct clipped artwork 20:08
-
Drag the cuffs out of the technical sketch area.
-
Do the same for the back cuffs.
-
Check for unwanted outlines or overhangs, especially if the cuff color was changed for visibility.
-
Copy the already extracted sleeve artwork into the cuff layer.
-
Keep the clipping masks intact and hide the base color so the main artwork shows through correctly.
13. Apply the adult large cuff to all sizes without grading 23:23
-
Since cuffs are the same across sizes, you do not grade them.
-
Copy the stripe layer into the cuff layer before removing the old cuffs.
-
Paste the adult large cuff into the correct clipping mask for each size.
-
Use the adult large as the master reference for all other sizes.
14. Replace the cuffs in each size and keep the correct front/back placement 26:25
-
Remove the old cuffs.
-
Paste the new cuff into the correct size-specific clipping mask.
-
Repeat this for all sizes.
-
Make sure the front cuff goes into the front panel and the back cuff goes into the back panel.
-
Use labels and color coding to avoid placing the wrong cuff in the wrong sleeve.
15. Move the adult large cuff into each size’s clipping mask 33:50
-
Open each size artboard.
-
The cuff should already be centered.
-
Bring it straight down to the bottom alignment line.
-
Replace the existing clipping mask with the correct one for that size.
-
The fold line remains consistent, so the cuff placement should stay aligned across sizes.
16. Remove the extra stripes after all cuffs are placed 38:54
-
Once all cuffs are in place, remove the extra stripe layers.
-
Use multi-select to delete the stripes efficiently.
-
After cleanup, drag the cuff artwork into the correct clipping masks.
-
Delete any leftover temporary elements.
17. Final QC check and save the file 44:14
-
Turn off labels and the design box for a clean final review.
-
Zoom out and inspect the cuffs visually.
-
Confirm everything looks correct on both front and back.
-
Save the file.
-
Version the file up to 12 to complete the update.
