v1.6 — Replacing The Line Art, Threads, & Shadows Symbols From The Base
Technical Sketch | 2Ds | Phase 3
Last Updated: May 6, 2026
TRIM & SYMBOL INTEGRATION
Overview
In this overview, you will learn how to replace an old placeholder pattern with the finished 2D artwork and organize it correctly inside the front and back symbols.
You will start after all key 2D elements are complete—base colors, threads, piping, collars, and bottom binding. From there, you will see how to remove the outdated pattern and style structure and rebuild the layers using the finalized artwork. For both the front and back, you will learn to select all components, reset their position to X = 0 and Y = 0, paste them into the correct symbol, unhide the line art, and then hide any elements that are no longer needed while exposing the shadow and wrinkle layers.
The walkthrough also demonstrates how to bring line art into the dedicated line art layers and how to reposition threads, sleeves, cuffs, and piping so each piece sits in the appropriate layer. Finally, you will learn to lock and hide completed layers, verify that the front panel updates correctly, and then repeat the same replacement and organization process for the back panel. This helps you understand not only what to do, but why each step keeps the file clean and easy to work with later.
STEP-by-STep guide
1. Remove the old placeholder structure and prepare the finished 2D assets 0:00
-
Start once the finished 2D elements are already created:
-
base colors
-
threads
-
piping
-
armhole piping
-
collars
-
bottom binding
-
-
Delete the old pattern/style structure that was only being used as a guide.
-
The goal is to replace the temporary setup with the final symbol structure based on the completed 2D artwork.
2. Rebuild the back symbol by moving the finished artwork into the correct layers 0:57
-
Select the full back artwork, including:
-
line art
-
base color
-
any other visible components
-
-
Set the artwork position to
X = 0, Y = 0. -
Cut the back artwork from the front symbol area and paste it into the back base symbol.
-
Unhide the line art if needed so everything can be deleted or moved together.
-
Reassign the back pieces into their proper layers, such as:
-
back base
-
bottom binding
-
collar
-
piping / cuffs if applicable
-
-
If a layer name does not match the garment piece, rename or repurpose it so the correct artwork lands in the correct symbol.
3. Clean up the front symbol and place each front component into its proper layer 3:19
-
Return to the front base symbol.
-
Bring the line art back into view and place it in the line art layer.
-
Remove artwork from any unnecessary groups if the file structure is inconsistent.
-
Move the front components into the correct front layers, such as:
-
front base
-
front bottom binding
-
piping
-
collar
-
inside / outside pieces if present
-
-
Close and collapse the layer groups once the front structure is organized.
4. Rebuild the front base, shadow, thread, and line art layers 5:37
-
Confirm the front artwork is in the correct symbol, not accidentally left in a line art-only layer.
-
For the base layer:
-
select the line art, base color, and piping
-
hide anything not needed for the base view
-
-
For the shadow layer:
-
expose the shadow artwork
-
keep only the wrinkle/shadow details that belong there
-
delete or move any extra lines that do not belong
-
paste the correct shadow artwork and set it to
0, 0
-
-
For the thread layer:
-
select all thread artwork
-
delete the old contents
-
paste in the updated thread artwork
-
set it to
0, 0
-
-
For the line art layer:
-
bring the line art into the line art thread layer
-
hide the front and shadow layers as needed
-
-
After these steps, the front panel should display the updated finished 2D correctly.
5. Repeat the same replacement process for the back panel 9:32
-
Select everything in the back panel.
-
Hide the back artwork while you work through the layers.
-
Update the shadow layer first:
-
paste the correct shadow artwork
-
set it to
0, 0 -
keep any intentional wrinkle detail in the center if it belongs there
-
-
Update the thread layer:
-
unhide the needed artwork
-
paste the correct thread content
-
remove anything that does not belong in the back thread layer
-
-
Update the line art layer:
-
select all line art
-
paste the correct line art
-
set it to
0, 0
-
-
Check the final back view to confirm the base, shadows, threads, and line art all display correctly.
6. Confirm the finished 2D symbol replacement workflow 12:16
-
The completed process is:
-
create the final 2D sketch lineup
-
replace the old symbols with the finished artwork
-
assign each garment element to the correct layer and symbol
-
-
This workflow is how the final 2D mockup is built from the finished artwork.
-
The next step in the larger process will be updating the client approval sheet.
-
If the garment is reversible, the approval sheet must be built as a reversible mockup rather than a simple front-and-back layout.
