v1.2 — Creating Line Art Sketches

Technical Sketch | 2Ds | Phase 2

Last Updated: May 6, 2026

LINE ART, SHADOWS & THREADS

Overview

In this video, I update the file through v1.2 and provide an overview of the line art and associated graphic styles. I begin from the base, since the front and back panels have already been created, then duplicate and relabel the front and back symbols for the line art. I also create the necessary clipping masks for the back and group elements where appropriate.

Next, I apply the preloaded graphic style panel sets, hide the base panels, and clip all elements to the line art, renaming the line art panels at the end. This video is informational only and does not require any action from the viewer.

STEP-by-STep guide

1. Save the file as the new version 0:00

  • Start by saving the file as the new version: v1.2.

  • This keeps the training file versioned and organized before making changes.

2. Open the base and prepare the front/back structure 0:17

  • This training focuses on the line art and the pre-loaded graphic styles.

  • Open the base file and confirm you have both the front and back panels available.

  • In this workflow, the base was created first, and the line art will be built afterward, which is a slightly different setup than usual.

3. Duplicate and rename the panel files using the existing naming convention 1:05

  • Keep the existing naming convention so the file stays consistent.

  • Duplicate the front technical sketch/base and rename it to 2D lineart.

  • Duplicate the back version and rename it accordingly.

  • Build the front first so it can later be copied into the back symbol when finished.

4. Create clipping masks for the front and back 1:52

  • Create a clipping mask for the front and another for the back.

  • This step should have been done earlier in the 2D overview, but it is added here to complete the setup.

  • Group the back elements as needed so the structure stays organized and easier to manage.

5. Open the Graphic Styles panel and locate the line art style 2:53

generated-image-at-00:02:53

  • The main task in this video is applying the correct line art style.

  • Open the Graphic Styles panel.

  • The styles are already pre-loaded and include many garment components such as:

    • base color

    • front / back / left / right

    • bottom binding

    • cuffs

    • digital measurements

    • cut line

    • 2D and 1D styles

    • 2D line art styles

    • cover stitch

    • straight stitch

    • thread color

  • You can view the styles in thumbnail or list view, depending on what is easiest to find.

6. Hide the base panels and apply the line art clipping style 4:18

generated-image-at-00:04:18

  • Hide the base panels so only the line art result is visible.

  • Apply the line art graphic style by clipping it to the line art layer.

  • This should reveal the line art correctly on the artwork.

7. Rename the finished panels and note the shadow layer for later 4:32

  • Once the line art looks correct, rename the panels to line since that is now their function.

  • The remaining shadow element is not handled in this video.

  • That shadow layer will be addressed in the next video.
