v0.14 — Applying Collar Layers

Building Masters | 123 | Phase 3

Last Updated: May 5, 2026

Key GRAPHICS & PATTERN LAYERS

Overview

In this lesson, you will learn how to build and organize the Collar layer so it works correctly in both 2D and 3D views.

You will start by turning on the Collar layer and setting the eCom collar color to a high‑visibility option (such as yellow) to make shape and alignment checks easier. Then you will align the 2D and 3D collar pieces so the overall shape and sew line are correct, with special attention to the Adult Large and production sizes. You will practice copying the base and collar symbols into the correct layers, extracting “inside to inside” and “outside to outside” from the technical sketch, and then deleting the technical sketch layer correctly once the collar pieces are placed.

To finish, you will perform a quick quality check to confirm the collar looks correct in the collar layer, then save and close the file so the collar work is fully complete.

STEP-by-STep guide

1. Turn on the Collar layer and set up the working color 0:00

  • Start by turning on the Collar layer.

  • Delete the existing 2D design if you want to rebuild it from scratch.

  • Go to Ecom and change the color to something obvious (the example uses yellow) so it’s easy to see what you’re editing.

  • This makes it easier to spot shape and alignment issues while working.

2. Check the 3D shape and adjust the collar placement 0:36

  • Review the collar in 3D to see whether the shape looks correct.

  • If the collar looks slightly off, move it upward or adjust it until it matches the intended shape better.

  • Paste the updated collar into the 3D view and compare it against the expected form.

  • Repeat for the related collar pieces so the whole collar set stays consistent.

3. Align the production files to the base 1:21

  • For production, you do not need to start from the adult large if the collar is already close.

  • Select all the production color files.

  • Click the base and then the main file.

  • Align the collar to the bottom so the pieces line up correctly.

  • Once aligned, no further structural edits are needed before QC.

4. QC the collar and confirm the size looks right 2:44

  • Perform a quick QC check to make sure the collar is correct.

  • Pay special attention to the large size, since it looked slightly off in the demo.

  • Confirm that the collar shape, placement, and proportions are acceptable before moving on.

5. Copy the base colors into the Collar layer 5:37

generated-image-at-00:05:37

  • Grab the base colors.

  • Scroll up to the Collar section.

  • Paste the colors into the Collar layer.

  • Verify the medium size and correct the sew line if needed.

  • This completes the color transfer for the collar.

6. Finish the 3D collar setup 6:34

generated-image-at-00:06:34

  • Confirm that the collar’s 1D, 2D, and 3D elements are complete.

  • At this point, the 3D collar work is done.

  • Move on to the 2D setup next.

7. Copy the technical sketch into the collar color layer 7:08

  • Click the base color and copy it.

  • Scroll to the appropriate color layer and paste it in.

  • The goal here is to copy the technical sketch into the correct collar layer structure.

  • Make sure all symbols are placed inside the correct layer before continuing.

8. Break apart the technical sketch and organize collar pieces 8:06

generated-image-at-00:08:06

  • Break up the technical sketch so the collar pieces can be separated properly.

  • Move the symbols into their correct layers.

  • Extract the collar pieces and keep the structure organized:

    • Inside goes to inside

    • Outside goes to outside

  • Place the technical sketch into the correct area for the collar layer.

9. Delete the technical sketch correctly and verify the collar layer 8:49

generated-image-at-00:08:49

  • Delete the technical sketch once the collar pieces are in place.

  • You cannot delete layers casually; click the layer so it highlights blue, then delete it properly.

  • Confirm that the collar pieces are now visible in the collar layer.

  • If the preview still looks stuck, refresh/jolt it by moving in and out or removing it and rechecking.

10. Save and close out the collar work 9:53

generated-image-at-00:09:53

  • Save the file.

  • Close everything up.

  • The collar has now been moved from the side panels into the collar layer and completed.

  • The whole process took less than 10 minutes in the demo.
